He considers himself “really fortunate in an unfortunate diagnosis,” finding strength and patience he never knew he had.

When first diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer, Van Der Beek was shocked, having felt healthy and active beforehand.

“I was so healthy, was in amazing cardiovascular shape. I was doing the cold plunges, and the saunas, and the intermittent fasting and all of it,” he said.

He noticed subtle symptoms and decided to ask for a colonoscopy, leading to his diagnosis. He emphasizes the importance of early screening for everyone aged 45 and up.

“If anybody takes anything away from this interview, it would be get tested, talk to your doctor,” Van Der Beek said.

The actor is grateful for his wife, Kimberly, describing her as “an absolute saint” who manages their household and children during his illness.

With open conversations, their six children have shown remarkable resilience and understanding as the family navigates this journey.

Van Der Beek admits there are scary moments but says the experience has brought him a new sense of presence and appreciation for each day.

“Presence I think is really the gift that cancer has given me,” he shared.

Recently, he finished filming a prequel to “Legally Blonde” and feels grateful to be working, hopeful, and surrounded by support.
