For years, Donnell Stallworth looked forward to greeting a special customer at the Shrimp Basket in Pensacola, Florida, every day at 11 a.m.

Staff considered the gentle visitor “everyone’s grandpa,” even throwing him a party for his 78th birthday.

The devoted customer’s daily gumbo order was a tradition, which made his sudden disappearance cause for concern.

After several worrying days, Donnell took action and went to his friend’s house, determined to check on him.

“I just left work, went to his house, and I knocked on the door like two times,” he told WEAR-TV News in the video below. “The third time I knocked on it… I kind of stayed up for a minute, and I knocked again, and I heard him like, ‘Help’ and ‘Who is it?’”

Hearing Donnell’s voice, the man called for help—he had fallen and been unable to get up for days.

The caring cook found him on the floor with serious injuries and quickly got paramedics to the scene.

“He was in tears, like, ‘I don’t even know how long I’ve been here’,” Donell recalled.

Thanks to Donnell’s quick thinking, his friend is now recovering with the help of rehabilitation—and, of course, those cherished cups of gumbo brought by Donnell.
