Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott recently revealed she donated $7.1 billion over the last year to organizations working around the globe. Her total giving since 2019 now stands at $26 billion, nearly all of her settlement from her divorce with Jeff Bezos.

Recipients often learn of her life-changing gifts with little advance notice, a testament to her humble approach. Kim Mazzuca, CEO of 10,000 Degrees, was overjoyed when she learned her nonprofit had received support.

“I was just filled with such joy. I was speechless and I kind of stumbled around with my words,” she said after being notified by an intermediary.

Scott credits early kindnesses in her own life for inspiring her giving.

“Whose generosity did I think of every time I made every one of the thousands of gifts I’ve been able to give? It was the local dentist who offered me free dental work when he saw me securing a broken tooth with denture glue in college,” she shared on her website, Yield Giving.

“It was the college roommate who found me crying, and acted on her urge to loan me a thousand dollars to keep me from having to drop out in my sophomore year.”

Many of Scott’s gifts focus on helping students access higher education and manage expenses, building brighter futures for countless young people.
