Photographer Creates Tiny “Hobbit Village” for Field Mice
- Photographer Simon Dell spotted a tiny field mouse a few years ago and created a makeshift shelter to keep him safe.
- The mouse then had a lady friend over and made a family!
- Simon added several homes to accommodate the tiny residents, until he had created a mouse-sized Hobbit village.
When photographer Simon Dell of England spotted a tiny brown field mouse a few years ago, he never thought that he would end up creating a tiny storybook village for several field mice.
Simon was taking pictures of wild birds in his garden when he noticed the mouse standing up “like a meerkat.” The mouse, which he named George, was instantly recognizable because of a tiny tear on his ear.
Simon also spotted a curious cat watching nearby, so he decided to create a safe shelter made up of log piles. He offered George some treats until the tiny critter stuck around.
Simon said, “I wanted to give them a safe place in the garden and not fall prey to cats or other animals.”
He also wanted to create a photo-worthy habitat.
It wasn’t long before George brought in a guest to his home. Simon named George’s lady friend Mildred.
Soon enough, George and Mildred started a family.
Simon added several other structures and delightful decorations to make up a fairytale-like “Hobbit village” that houses around 10 mice.
While the other mice come and go, George and Mildred have remained. As they raise their young, Simon gives them nuts, fruits, and berries every day. He also gives them feather pillows for the colder seasons.

Simon has found the perfect photography subjects! The miniature scenes are so adorable. Take a look at this tiny mouse interacting with a mailbox:

He shared, “The mice seem to love the log pile homes and wasted no time moving in. They are wild animals, so they still run if I get too close or move too fast, but often I manage to sit down just a few feet away with a zoom lens and they seem happy to pop in and out for nuts or seed.”
