Maryland Leads the Nation with New Grocery Pricing Protections

Maryland is set to become the first state in the nation to ban surveillance pricing in grocery stores. Governor Wes Moore confirmed he will sign the Protection from Predatory Pricing Act to safeguard families from real-time price manipulations.
Surveillance pricing occurs when retailers use personal data to charge different shoppers different prices for the same item. The new legislation aims to prevent large corporations from using predictive technology to hike costs for everyday necessities.
“At a time when Marylanders are already stretched by the rising cost of groceries, housing, and everyday necessities, we must ensure that new technologies are not used to drive up the bill for working families,”
Governor Moore said.
The law will require grocery stores to keep prices fixed for at least one full business day. It also prohibits using income, ethnicity, or shopping habits to set individualized prices for customers.
Similar measures are currently being considered in other states including California, Colorado, and New York. This movement highlights a growing national effort to protect consumer privacy and financial stability at the checkout counter.
Quick Smiles:
- Maryland makes history as the first state to outlaw grocery surveillance pricing.
- New rules ensure prices stay consistent for shoppers instead of shifting by personal data.
- Other states are also considering similar protections for consumers.

Price controls in pretty wrapping. So I wonder what Kroger will choose if given the choice between the lower price and the higher price??? “I’m from the government and I’m here to help. “
