  • The staff of a Dairy Queen store in Brainerd, Minnesota were uplifted by an incredible pay-it-forward chain.
  • During the lunch rush hour on Thursday, Dec. 3, a customer said he will pay for his order as well as that of the next-in-line.
  • It then started a chain that included over 900 customers and lasted for almost three days!

The residents of Brainerd, Minnesota got to witness — and take part in — a spectacular chain of paying it forward when over 900 customers decided to pay for the next in line at a Dairy Queen drive-thru.

Tina Jensen, the general manager of two Dairy Queen stores in Brainerd, said that the giving chain lasted for almost three days. It began during the lunch rush hour on Thursday, Dec. 3, and went on until Saturday evening, Dec. 5.

She told TODAY Food, “A gentleman during our lunch hour came through and said he’d like to pay for his meal and the car behind him … The next car pulled up and we said, ‘The gentleman in front of you paid for your meal. If you’d like, you can pay it forward. She was like, ‘Yes, of course,’ no questions, just, ‘Go for it.”

Tina shared that she has previously witnessed such chains that involved 15 or 20 cars, but there was never anything like this. The unprecedented event raked in around $10,000 in sales!

She recalled, “After getting through the lunch hour, it was still going and over 100 cars. That’s when I was like, ‘Oh.’”

Tina shared what was happening to the rest of the world via the restaurant’s Facebook page. The employees made sure to update her after every shift.

It soon made a buzz across social media! Tina said how people would get “very, very excited” to find out that it was still ongoing.

Even people outside the line joined in! Some called the store to put money on a gift card so that it could help a customer who didn’t have the means to pay it forward.

That helped the chain going, since some customers’ order would only cost $5 and the next in line would be a whole family with an order costing $30 to $40.

The chain eventually ended on Saturday night. The gift cards had run out and a customer couldn’t pay for the party behind them.

Nevertheless, the whole experience was unforgettable for the staff.

“Since March, tons of things have changed, tons of things are going on, and it’s not just in the store. We are people. We have things going on outside … The energy was definitely uplifting. There was no negative energy going on,” she added.
