Puppy Given Second Chance Needs Loving Home

Quick Smiles:

  • Asher was saved from euthanasia by a last-minute adoption.
  • Volunteers are helping him recover and show his sweet, playful side.
  • Shelter seeks a foster or adopter who understands puppy energy.

At Tulsa Animal Services, Asher, a 5-month-old puppy, won hearts when he was adopted just one hour before his scheduled euthanasia. But heartbreak followed when he was returned a month later for being “too active”—a description volunteers gently disagree with.

“Asher has got a really big heart and a lot of love to give,” she said. “He’s playful but affectionate.”

“He was placed on the euthanasia list and was actually adopted just one hour before his deadline,” she said.

“The truth is Asher is just a typical happy, energetic puppy,” she said. “He knows basic commands, loves his toys, goes wild for zoomies, and will melt into your lap for snuggles when he’s done playing.”

“The first couple days that he was back in the shelter, he was very clearly depressed and not active at all,” Crabtree said. “He was stressed and scared. He’s been back for about a week now and is starting to get back to his normal self, thanks to volunteers taking him out and playing with him, but it definitely affected him pretty heavily.”

“Ash is affectionate and smart. He just needs a home that understands the normal energy of a young dog,” she added.

Crabtree shared a TikTok video on @crabbykakes95 showing Asher’s confusion and sadness upon return, and volunteers playing with him as he begins to bounce back.

Although I can’t adopt him because I already have 3 dogs (2 rescues), it would be nice if you posted pics with the story. The article doesn’t even mention his breed or his mix. You’ll get more interest if people can see what he looks like. I hate when people adopt to have a trophy pet without understanding there’s training involved (“Look, I have a house, a family, a new car in the driveway, a white picket fence and now a dog. My ideal family is complete.” or “My kids wanted a puppy.”) The parents need to know that with kids, the novelty of a new puppy wears off along with responsibility. The parents need to know that they’ve become the caretakers. You don’t just trade the puppy in for a new model. Some puppies are more rambunctious than others and need more patience and love. Be consistent in the training and rewards and lots of love. Good luck in finding this puppy a new home. Post a picture!
