Conservationists and zookeepers are celebrating after bonobo mother Yuli gave birth to a healthy baby at Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire.

Heartwarming photos capture Yuli cradling her newborn, who is now the only baby bonobo in the country.

Experts say this arrival marks a “globally significant” achievement that supports efforts to protect these endangered apes.

Yuli joined Twycross Zoo from Vallée Des Singes in France last year as part of a European conservation program.

“Bonobos are human’s closest living relatives, yet they remain one of the most endangered and least understood apes on Earth,” said Dr. Rebecca Biddle, chief conservation officer at Twycross Zoo.

“Every birth is a true milestone and a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when zoos work together.”

Bonobos share over 98% of their DNA with humans, but are threatened by factors like poaching and deforestation in their native Democratic Republic of the Congo.

As the only great ape with a matriarchal society, bonobos stand out for their unique social structure, where females lead the group.

The European-led program at Twycross Zoo cares for 10% of the bonobos in Europe and plays a vital role in international conservation efforts.

For now, both mother and baby will remain behind the scenes, enjoying a special period of bonding before meeting the public.
