Resilient Horse Rescued With Creative Teamwork

When Mouse the horse disappeared during a Wyoming fishing trip, his owners never imagined he would be found safe after braving months in the snowy mountains.

Hope was restored when snowmobilers spotted Mouse nearly 10 miles from easy access, leading to a remarkable rescue mission.

“I was pretty worried because it’s a horse that me and my friends are partners on, and I didn’t want to lose that,” co-owner Preston Jorgenson told MTN News.

The rescuers, facing miles of deep snow, brought together snow machines and a Snow Cat before a volunteer suggested using a river raft for transport.

“That’s when the great idea came up of, hey, we’ll get a river raft,” said volunteer Buster Campbell.

Campbell humorously recalled requesting a raft, saying, “‘If you don’t mind me asking, what do you need this for?’ And I said, ‘You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.’”

Mouse calmly entered the raft and, pulled by snowmobiles, made his journey out of the wilderness surrounded by a dedicated rescue team.

“He walked right up in there, so we let him stand there for a little bit and let him know everything’s okay,” Jorgenson shared. “I was pretty excited to see all that. Just him riding in a raft.”

The team carefully hauled Mouse through the snow, even as the tired horse rested inside the raft during the trip.

By Sunday afternoon, Mouse was finally back home, happily reunited with his loving owners and already enjoying his surroundings.

“Oh yeah, he’s doing great,” Jorgenson said. “He’s eating and drinking water just fine. I actually seen him trotting around in a field today.”

For all involved, the rescue became a testament to community and compassion.

“That’s what makes it so amazing,” Campbell said. “People on different fronts of life and everybody just able to sit down and come down together on a situation, with one thing in mind. We’re going to get him out of there.”
