A delightful video featuring a Saint Bernard who “thinks she is also a cat” and enjoys helping care for kittens has taken TikTok by storm.

A message overlaid on the video reads: “My Saint Bernard’s morning routine when we have baby kitties.”

The footage captures Dakota, a three-year-old Saint Bernard, making her way up a flight of stairs to “go see the babies.”

Her owner shared:
“Each morning when I feed the kittens, [Dakota] pushes her way in. I usually bottle feed them and she’s always right there, even at 4 a.m., as they need to be fed every three to four hours at a time.”

In the video, Dakota waits patiently outside a door before it is opened, then heads towards the bathroom where a carrier with kittens is placed inside an empty bathtub.

The kittens are shown scattered around the bathtub, with Dakota sticking her head in among them.

While dogs and cats are often considered “mortal enemies,” an increasing number of households have proven otherwise.

“Although some body postures, such as the tail’s position, are interpreted differently by the two species, the greater proportions of dogs and cats show a relaxed response to several kinds of approaches of their roommate,” the study highlighted.

“It is true that they speak different languages, but they seem to understand each other well and interpret each other’s approaches in the right way,” the study added.

The TikTok post’s caption read:
“Dakota is the best foster assistant when we have baby kitties. She loves to help me feed them & babysits them too!”

The poster frequently fosters litters of kittens in collaboration with a local rescue.

“We usually have the kittens for a week at a time, sometimes a little longer. Once done bottle feeding, I find a new foster to take over,” they shared.

The poster also mentioned having three cats of their own and shared that when Dakota was first brought home, “she was the size of the cats at first.”

“I think she thinks she is also a cat; she plays with cat toys too,” they added.

Dakota has now helped care for six litters of kittens.

“She hears them cry and she wants to be with them,” the poster said.
