Teen Brothers Transform Waste Into Hope

Published

Quick Smiles:

  • Two teenage brothers in New Delhi started a recycling movement that grew to 14 cities.
  • Their nonprofit, OneStepGreener, has recycled over 2 million pounds of waste and manages segregated waste for 3,000 households.
  • The brothers won the International Children’s Peace Prize for their impact on public sanitation and the environment.

The journey began when Vihaan and Nav Agarwal faced worsening air quality caused by garbage burning, which contributed to Vihaan’s asthma. A landfill collapse and resulting fires inspired them to act, starting with separating waste at home and rallying their neighbors to do the same.

They persisted even when initially rejected by waste collectors, eventually convincing authorities to collect separated trash when 15 households joined their cause.

“The main issue in waste management is that everybody thinks it’s not their job, or if the waste is out of their house, it’s out of their mind,”

Vihaan told Euro News.

OneStepGreener continues to innovate, ensuring waste is carefully sorted for effective recycling and supporting the environment by planting urban trees. Their efforts have matched the daily waste output of New Delhi’s enormous population.

Nav Agarwal shared, if a city like Delhi can achieve this success, it can inspire cities everywhere to take action.

Let’s celebrate these driven youths who turned a personal challenge into a powerful solution for their community and environment. Find more inspiring stories when you join us next time!
