Underwater Gaia Sculpture Inspires Renewal

Quick Smiles:
- Underwater sculpture becomes an artificial reef in Japan
- Created with eco-friendly materials to nurture marine life
- Aims to reconnect people with the ocean’s wonders
Off the shores of Tokunoshima, Japan, a breathtaking 40-tonne sculpture called Ocean Gaia now rests beneath the waves. Just five metres below the surface, this tranquil piece echoes natural sea patterns and invites marine life to make it their home.
The artist, Jason deCaires Taylor, crafted the sculpture using low-carbon, pH-neutral materials, ensuring it will help fish and coral flourish as a new reef. The design even features edges for sea creatures to claim as their own.
“Ocean Gaia stands as both a symbol of renewal and a gesture toward reconnection between people, the sea and the continuity of life itself,” explained Taylor.
This inspiring work encourages young islanders to rediscover the magic of their coastline, offering a peaceful reminder of hope and the cycles of life that begin beneath the ocean’s surface.
