On a seemingly ordinary day in Australia, Stephen Morando found himself in a rather extraordinary situation. As he was driving home after picking up his kids from kindergarten, he stumbled upon a scene that made him hit the brakes and reverse his car.

A “chonky” dog had wedged himself between the bars of a front gate, evidently in an attempt to escape.

“I had just picked my kids up from kindergarten and was heading home when I drove past this house,” Morando shared.

“Not believing what I’d just seen, I hit the brakes and backed up.”

With a keen eye for the situation, Morando quickly deduced the cause of the pup’s predicament.

“Pupper was definitely trying to escape but had a few too many snackos to get his belly between the railings,” he observed.

While the sight of a plump pup might bring a smile, it’s important to remember that pet obesity is a growing concern.

A 2022 survey by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention found that 59 percent of domesticated dogs in the U.S. were overweight.

Feeling the need to document this unusual event, Morando recorded the rescue on his phone.

“I don’t think anyone would have believed me if I didn’t get it on camera,” he explained.

With some effort, Morando managed to free the dog, leaving him with a sense of fulfillment as he continued his day.

“It feels good to help out the helpless,” he reflected.

The video, which has garnered 326,000 views on TikTok, drew applause and laughter from viewers.

“Not all hero’s wear capes so they say, good on ya mate,” one user commented, while another humorously noted, “I like how you guided his chonk through the bars like kneading play doh.”

A viewer shared, “We just lost our old chonky staffy girl this week, she looked just like him and this video made me happy cry totally something she would have done.”

Despite the praise, Morando believes it was the dog who truly “stole the show” and captured the hearts of many.

Steps have been taken to prevent future escapades, as Morando revealed, “Turned out a friend of mine knew the owner, and he has since fixed the gate.”
