  • An Indiana woman was surprised when she went to pick up her son’s birthday cake and was told that it had been paid for by a stranger.
  • The stranger left a note explaining that she paid for the cake to honor her late son’s birthday.
  • Carolyn Mick was touched by the woman’s gesture that she shared the heartwarming story on Facebook to thank the woman.

Carolyn Mick went to a Plainfield Kroger grocery store on Sunday to pick up her son’s birthday cake. To her surprise, she was told that a stranger had already paid for it, CW affiliate WISH-TV reported.

The woman left a note, explaining why she did the random act of kindness. Carolyn later shared the letter in the Town of Plainfield Chatter Facebook group.

“Today is my son’s 35th birthday, his 5th one in heaven,” the note reads. “In his memory, I’ve paid for your cake. Please enjoy, make special memories and hug your children and loved ones tight. My son loved cake!”

The letter was signed by Toni, “Tyler’s mom.”

Carolyn thanked “Toni”. She also wrote that she and her husband were “moved” by the stranger’s sweet gesture.

“Dear Toni.. you know who you are and I want to express how moved I am,” Carolyn wrote in the Facebook post. “This means so much that my husband and I cried together. With the turmoil of things going on, it reminds us of what really matters: LIFE!”

When contacted by PEOPLE, Carolyn says that Toni’s kindness “meant a lot” because she recently lost her mother and was” pondering on how to celebrate her birthday coming up in June.”

“Never thought about paying for a cake,” Carolyn told PEOPLE. “We have it in us to be kind and supportive of others. You never know what a simple cake can mean to someone else.”

Several Facebook users responded to Carolyn’s post. They praised Toni for her kindness. Some claimed they actually knew Toni and her son Tyler personally.

“This moved me so much, and so happy to see it was my local Kroger!” commented one user. “It’s nice to see people reaching out (even anonymously) to support each other during those sad times.”

“THIS IS JUST THE BEST! Toni- I love how you are honoring Tyler and blessing someone else and sharing with us all to cherish our time with our loved ones. We are not guaranteed another day and we all too often take that for granted,” added another person.

Finally, Toni revealed herself in the post as Toni Wilson-Taylor.

“This is Tyler,” Toni wrote, alongside a photo of her late son. “May God bless your family as you celebrate a loved ones birthday today. Enjoy.”

In a follow-up comment, Toni wrote, “I’ve been carried all day by these wonderful caring prayers. I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. I never dreamed buying a cake would spread so much love and carry my family thru a tough day. So blessed.”
