Four-Yr-Old Who Learned Piano Over Lockdown Gets Invites From Carnegie Hall [Video]
- Brigitte Xie learned to play the piano from her pianist mom when she was just 3 years old.
- She turned out to be a prodigy who can easily learn classical pieces and win international competitions!
- She even won a ticket to play at Carnegie Hall, but she was too young to take the required vaccine.
Brigitte Xie, 4, only started playing piano about a year ago during the lockdown. But even though her feet can’t even reach the pedals, she has proven herself to be quite the prodigy.
Her mother, Nicole Sun from Ridgefield, Connecticut, was the one who introduced the piano to her then 3-year-old daughter. As a pianist, she simply wanted to show her little one another mode of entertainment.
She had no idea how quickly Brigitte would learn! She could follow instructions, read sheet music and classical pieces, and play them with ease. She can even play a note-perfect rendition of Beethoven’s Sonatina in F Major.
Eventually, her mom couldn’t keep up with the lessons so she enlisted the help of online tutor Felicia Feng Zhang.
The little prodigy “picked up more in six months than most do in years worth of lessons”!
The pre-schooler soon attended in-person lessons with Felicia in Greenwich, Connecticut. She was encouraged to enter competitions.
Before turning 4 in May, Brigitte had already passed her Royal College of Music Level 1 exam with a first-class mark of 86.
Last December, she won the Elite National Music Competition. She then won the American Protégé International Competition in March. That would have been her ticket to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City this November — where she would have been one of the youngest ever to play.
However, the venue requires all performers to be vaccinated, and Brigitte is still too young to take the vaccine. She will have to take another chance in 2022.
Nicole said that Brigitte may not even be aware of the prestige: “I tell her ‘yeah baby you won the prize’ and she was like ‘ok, can we go to Disney store now?’ I tell her ‘you’re going to perform in front of many people’ and she seemed excited because she likes performing.”
Despite the little girl’s amazing talent, her mom doesn’t want to push her. “As a parent I’m still open to everything, I don’t tell her that she must be a pianist,” Nicole said. “Whatever she wants to be is fine.”
Still, Brigitte loves playing. She would practice for about 45 minutes a day and attend a half-hour lesson every week without being told to.
Brigitte plans to perform Mozart when she eventually takes the stage. And we’re all looking forward to it!
