  • The boy has stage 3 cancer.

Eight-year-old Landen Baer is the newest officer of the York County Police Department. Landen might be a bit young, but he has the deepest passion for his new “career”.

The police department doesn’t normally accept children into the force, but through the help of Make-A-Wish, the boy was sworn in as a police officer. Landen has stage 3 cancer.

It’s been a difficult time battling cancer, and Landen was overjoyed when he heard that he would be getting sworn in as a police officer.

“It means the world to him,” said Landen’s mom. “He’s been talking about it for weeks.”

When the day finally arrived, Landen dressed in uniform from head to toe, complete with a badge. The people who had gathered to witness his big moment cheered and clapped in celebration when the district justice administered the oath to officially swear him in.

Immediately after he was sworn in, Landen got down to work.

“Somebody stole some property,” another officer told Landen, “and we’re going to need your help to catch the bad guy.”

Officer Landen and his partner went outside and were able to catch the culprit. “Put your hands behind your back,” Officer Landen said. “You’re under arrest.”

Days later, Landen also had the chance to sit in the cockpit of the state police helicopter, ride on a fire truck, and he even joined a parade.

When asked about Landen’s biggest motivation to be a police officer, his mom answered: “He’s such a sweet little boy, and he wants nothing more than to help people.”
