Skateway Team Reunites Little Boy with Stuffed Toy Dropped in Frozen Canal

A skateway team came through for one little boy when they worked hard to reunite him with his precious stuffed toy.

Every kid has their favorite toy. For 4-year-old Nico Lavallée, it was a plush toy Bambi named Rudolph.

Unfortunately, while Santa’s red-nosed reindeer can fly, Nico’s Rudolph cannot.

During a walk one day with his mom and siblings, his 2-year-old brother Santiago tossed plushie Rudolph over the railing and into the frozen waters of Ottawa’s Rideau Canal.

While the plushie landed near the distance marker sign, it would be next to impossible for them to retrieve it. Still, the family visited the location regularly, despite Rudolph becoming more and more covered in snow.

Nico’s 6-year-old brother Sebastian then told their mom, Brenda Duke, about how social media has come through for many people in the past years. So he urged her to reach out and ask for help.

Brenda was doubtful, however, and “didn’t want to bother anyone.” She also thought that no one would care, anyway.

After a little more convincing from Sebastian, she decided to give it a shot. She shared a photo showing Rudolph’s last whereabouts and reached out to Twitterverse.

“Toddler brother threw it in. I know it’s unlikely since they clear snow now and it will be even more buried but my 6-year-old asked me to post here. They come visit it on our daily walks now; it’s the little mound you see,” she wrote.

Her post reached the National Capital Commission (NCC), and its skateway squad went on the lookout.

“After several hours of relentless searching,” the squad found it! “He is now safe and sound while he defrosts,” they responded on Twitter.

The squad let the stuffie thaw, then groomed Rudolph to be ready for his reunion with Nico.

A grateful Brenda realized, “You just have to ask. People do care.”

The experience made Brenda realize that assuming people don’t care is usually what adults do. But her kids reminded her that “other people have our backs and other people care, and that’s really heartwarming.”
