  • During the pandemic, the kids of a Dallas, Texas neighborhood bonded and formed a group called the gang.
  • The gang one day witnessed a strange man coming out of Karen Holt’s house and they left a note on her door asking if she was OK.
  • The strange man turned out to be Holt’s ex-husband who comes every now and then to help in house maintenance.

A group of neighborhood kids ranging from 6 to 11 years old in Dallas, Texas bonded during the pandemic and named themselves, the gang. One time, they noticed the widely opened door of an elderly neighbor and they alerted their parents.  The parents then learned that the neighbor’s air conditioning unit was not working, making her open the door. They then helped her fix the aircon.

Thus, the start of The Gang’s neighborhood watch.

Just this December 22, in a post on Reddit, Alyssa shared the note left for her mom, Karen Holt,  by the gang.  It read: “Ms. Karren we saw a strange man walk in your house, and we would like to know if you are OK. If you are then text my mom. Love the gang.”

The post received 70,000 upvotes and comments like “This is so great! What a sweet group of kids.” While another Redditor commented, “That is precious! I got a kick out of your note about your dad!”

Holt explained, “Her dad and I are divorced. He came over to help me cover water faucets and do other things to protect against the cold front that was coming in.” The probable reason why the kids do not see him is because he always comes in the back door.  This time, when he exited through the front door, the kids saw him, thus the alert.

Holt heard a knock and when she opened the door, she saw the kids but not the note. She asked them if they knocked and they gestured towards the note on the door. Holt said, “When I read the note, I walked over to them and told them how kind and thoughtful I thought they were.”

Elisabeth Rutledge, mom of one of the kids named Susie, recalled that she was at home when the kids rushed to her and voiced their concern over the strange man and they decided on leaving a note for Holt. After a few minutes, Susie informed her Holt was fine. Holt also texted and sent the picture of the note. Holt said she was really touched by their concern. Rutledge is proud of the way the kids care about their neighbors.

Holt also told all three groups of parents that they are doing a great job. She added, “Those children are wonderful.” Thanks for your vigilance, kids!
