- Search efforts for Wilson, the Belgian shepherd, are still ongoing. The military, determined not to leave any element behind, has about 70 commandos looking for the canine hero.
In a heartwarming tale of resilience, bravery, and a tribute to an unsung hero, we follow the story of four young siblings who survived a harrowing 40 days in the vast Amazon jungle after a tragic plane crash.
During their ordeal, a beacon of hope and companionship came in an unexpected form – a rescue dog named Wilson.
The children, having been rescued last week, have now found a way to express their gratitude to their canine friend.
The Belgian shepherd, Wilson, had been part of the search efforts to find the children in the Colombian jungle and had become lost in the process.
While currently missing, the memory of Wilson lives on in the hearts of the rescued siblings, Lesly Jacobombaire Mucutuy, 13, and Soleiny Jacobombaire Mucutuy, 9.
Their creative outlet during their recovery in Bogotá’s military hospital?

The children’s grandfather recalled how the search dog had become a “faithful friend” to the children during their time in the wilderness.
Military spokesperson Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez Suárez shared that the kids had spent several days with Wilson, describing the dog as having been quite skinny.
Despite the daunting challenges of the jungle, search efforts for Wilson are still ongoing.
As General Helder Giraldo reaffirmed, the search will continue until Wilson is found, with about 70 commandos currently deployed for the task.
The young survivors, also including Tien Ranoque Mucutuy, 4, and Cristin Ranoque Mucutuy, 1, were found on June 9, a full 40 days after their plane crashed on May 1.
They had been travelling with their mother and two other adults, all of whom tragically did not survive the accident.
The children had reportedly told rescuers that they’d been accompanied by a large dog during their time in the jungle, believed to be Wilson, one of the 10 military sniffer dogs used in the search operation.
As the children recover and slowly regain their strength, the grandfather shared that they are eating and “drawing to let off steam.”
Their survival has been attributed to their learned skills of living in the jungle from indigenous families, a tale of “total survival that will be remembered in history,” according to Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro.
The heartrending story of these children’s survival and their connection to a brave canine companion stands as a testament to the power of resilience, companionship, and the bonds formed in the face of adversity.
As they continue to draw and share their memories of Wilson, we are reminded of the love and warmth that even the most challenging circumstances can inspire.
The search for Wilson continues, echoing the enduring hope and strength that the children displayed in their incredible journey of survival.
