Imagine the joy of a child when their parents bring home a new puppy. Now, multiply that by five! A toddler in Texas recently experienced this when his mother, Kristin Erwin, brought home five rescue puppies in need of some tender loving care and plenty of playtime.

Erwin first learned about the puppies from a local resident who had taken them in but was struggling with the number of dogs. Along with her friend, Megan Josey, Erwin initially offered support by delivering food and administering medication to the pups. However, a week later, she found herself unable to leave without the puppies.

“I just couldn’t walk away a second time,” Erwin shared. She quickly texted her husband about the possibility of caring for the abandoned puppies. “He didn’t have to tell me twice, as they were already loaded in the back of my van,” she added with a chuckle.

The puppies, believed to be around 10 to 11 weeks old, are primarily German shepherd, with a mix of other breeds. They were rescued from a dead-end road notorious for dog dumping. “We’re preparing them for treatment,” Erwin explained, as the puppies’ mother tested positive for heartworm.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates that 3.1 million dogs enter shelters across the U.S. every year. While around 2 million find homes, many more wait for adoption, causing shelters to struggle with capacity.

Fortunately, Erwin isn’t alone in caring for these puppies. Her three-year-old son, Henry, is more than eager to help. Henry enjoys running around the yard with the puppies trailing behind him, and sometimes, they even join him in the sandbox.

“Henry will play with them for an hour straight and gets sad when I tell him it’s time to put them up for a little while. He is in love with them and loves having them around,” Erwin shared.

While Henry has grown fond of the puppies, this is a temporary foster situation until they are adopted or taken to a shelter for adoption. Despite the impending goodbye, Erwin is optimistic about the future. “There are more puppies and dogs out there” who need help, she said, assuring that Henry will have many more canine friends.

Erwin shared a video of Henry and the puppies on her Instagram (@streetheartstx), which quickly went viral, garnering over 1 million views and 133,000 likes. The post not only brought joy to many but also highlighted the number of animals in need of a forever home.

“Texas is drowning in puppies. I’m so glad we were able to help these sweet babies so we can get them vetted, fixed, and adopted safely, but there are so many others out there. Spaying and neutering are the only solutions to decrease the stray dog population,” Erwin stated.
