  • A fan of the Boston Marathon has returned to cheering the Boston Marathoners on October 11.
  • Spencer, the beloved golden retriever who went viral in 2018 for cheering in runners, almost died in 2020 due to a tumor.
  • The dog miraculously survived the ordeal and is back to giving smiles at the race.

One of the internet’s favorite dogs has survived an obstacle in his life and is now back to giving cheers to people.

Spencer has returned to cheering runners on from the sidelines at the 125th Boston Marathon. The 12-year-old golden retriever had a tumor removed and “miraculously” survived the difficult procedure.

In a video posted to Facebook by Rich Powers, Spencer holds a series of notes in his mouth announcing he’s back.

The note read: “It’s been 2 ½ years. We’ve been through a lot. We’ve missed you all. We’re ready to see you again. Welcome back runners.”

Spencer is also shown running toward the camera with his flag that says “We are Boston Strong” on one side and a heart on the other.

Powers shared Spencer nearly died in 2020, and many worried that “he would never be able to cheer the Boston [M]arathon again.”

But now, the adorable golden retriever has returned.

In 2018, Spencer went viral for cheering on runners during a rain-soaked Boston Marathon. He was seen wearing a raincoat holding “Boston Strong” flags in his mouth. He went viral again the next year while supporting racers from the same spot.

WCVB reported that there were doubts if Spencer would join the 2021 Boston Marathon because of his health issues. A 3.5-lb. tumor was removed from the golden. Thankfully, he “miraculously” survived the ordeal and made it to the 125th Boston Marathon — which was postponed from Apr. 19 to Oct. 11 due to the pandemic.

“We are incredibly lucky to have him here to cheer the runners on again,” Powers wrote on Facebook. “If you know anyone running Monday, share this with them so they can keep an eye out for him around 2-3 miles in on the right side. We are Boston Strong.”

Powers told WCVB that Spencer’s cheering partner, Penny, is expected to attend the marathon as well.
