“Yappy and mean.” This is how Sinclair Martin would describe small dogs, which he made very clear with his wife, Sheridan.

So, when Sheridan wanted that their second dog be a Chihuahua, she knew she’d have a hard time convincing her husband.

Sinclair wanted big, tough dogs like their Pitbull/German Shepherd mix pet Merlin. He likes to be rough during play time, and he thinks a small dog couldn’t handle that.

Meanwhile, Sheridan grew up with a Chihuahua, so she knew better: small dogs don’t have to be underestimated.

“I begged and pleaded and eventually, he caved in and said for my next birthday I could [get a Chihuahua],” Sheridan said gleefully.

Albeit over the moon, Sheridan knew her husband would lecture her about having a small dog.

“I remember the whole week before and the entire car ride there he lectured me about how she was going to be my responsibility and my dog and he wasn’t going to have anything to do with her,” she said.

The couple ended up adopting a baby Chihuahua named Pickles, who, as Sheridan knew, has instantly won her husband’s heart.

How? Well, all Pickles had to do was stare at Sinclair with her big brown eyes and cling really, really close to him!

“As soon as the car door closed, he turns to me, points at Pickles and says, ‘Um, yeah, that’s OUR dog,’” Sheridan shared. “And she’s just staring at him like, ‘Yeah, I am.’”

Sinclair, without second thought, took on the primary role of caring for Pickles, from keeping her clean to putting her sweaters on. He even tucks her in every single night.

When it comes to playing it rough with their tough dog Merlin, Pickles didn’t disappoint. She is incredibly athletic and loves running, jumping, and wrestling above anything else. She can even play equal with other dogs 10 times her size!

“Pickles gives Merlin hell on a daily basis,” Martin said. “She runs him ragged.”

According to Sheridan, Pickles has all the personality of a 100-pound dog in a 5-pound body. “She makes everyone laugh because she makes really funny human facial expressions, like she knows something you don’t know, or is smug, or just looks really really happy.”

Apparently, Pickles is a genius in winning people’s hearts, even those who dislike small dogs, especially Chihuahuas. Sheridan’s dad, who also doesn’t like small dogs, instantly became smitten with Pickles.

Pickles is now a licensed service dog who helps her new family in any way she can. Sinclair, who was adamant in his seemingly hostility towards small dogs, had a change of heart — thanks to Pickles!
