Clever Dog Cleans Up After People’s Litter [Video]

Meet Milly, a 5-year-old Spanish Podenco who keeps her city clean by picking up litter and throwing it into the garbage bin.

Milly was abandoned in a trash bag tied to a tree branch when she was only 8 months old. She was then rescued and transferred to a shelter.

She later joined the family of Alfie Kitson and his wife Judith, who have been living in Spain for 20 years.

It was there that Alfie spotted a soldier and his dog picking up litter in a park in Malaga. It inspired him to teach the same trick to Milly.

He started by placing a box in their garden. As Milly started learning how to drop things into the box, Alfie gradually increased the box’s height.

By the time they moved to Britain 18 months ago, Milly had already mastered the trick.

The bins in Hereford were also the right size for Milly to showcase her talent.

When Alfie points to a piece of trash and says “put that in the bin,” Milly picks it up and throws it into the bin.

“Milly is a very intelligent dog and seems to enjoy her little party trick,” Alfie shared. The proud dog dad added that they are glad they can “show her off to others as she really is an amazing dog.”

While Hereford is not that filled with litter compared to other cities, Milly still takes her litter-picking seriously. She and Alfie make sure to clean up after humans who fail to dispose of their trash properly.

“Obviously, environmental concerns are a hot topic at the moment, so if we can help clear up rubbish and plastic off the street, then we’re doing our bit to help,” Alfie shared.

He added that aside from “helping keep the city clean and tidy, he and Milly also enjoy their activity together. It also puts a smile on people’s faces!

“Passers-by seem to love it, and she always gets a little round of applause,” he shared.

Samuel Tiler, an office worker in the city, said he couldn’t believe what he was seeing the first time. He shared, “I thought I might be going mad. I thought, ‘Is that really a dog tidying up people’s litter?’”

He added, “I just wish people could be more thoughtful as it shouldn’t take a dog to clear up after them. If you’ve got a dog doing their little part for the environment — surely we can do the same.”
