Couple on Honeymoon in Spain Become Instant Heroes After Rescuing Babies From Burning Nursery [Video]

  • A Rhode Island couple went to Spain for their honeymoon.
  • While walking along the streets of Barcelona, they saw a group of women outside a burning building.
  • The couple instinctively went inside the building and managed to roll out more than a dozen babies and saved them from the fire.

When David Squillante and Doran Smith, both 38, went to Spain for their honeymoon, they planned on soaking up the sights, food and culture and not being instant heroes.  But they did become heroes to babies as instinct took over for them.

The couple was strolling along the streets of Barcelona when they saw a burning building and a group of women panicking outside.

They quickly went inside the building and in one room, saw 15 to 20 “sleeping” babies.  Luckily, that part of the building was still not on fire but it was starting to fill up with smoke.

The couple just instinctively gathered one baby after another into a crib and got them out.

By then, others also chimed in to help.

Doran said, “We couldn’t speak the language, but there was a universal language — we were all just trying to help.”

In an instant, they were able to roll out all the babies to safety.

The couple did not stay long after their deed but went on to enjoy their honeymoon. They resumed a park tour that was on the schedule had they not stopped to help.

David said, “It felt like we watched it in a movie. It just didn’t feel real.”

But it seems that David has the blood of a volunteer firefighter in his veins.  His father and grandfather used to be one.  After the experience in Spain, he is now thinking of doing volunteer firefighting in Bristol, Rhode Island.
