Sixty-one years ago today, crews finished bolting the final piece of the Gateway Arch into place in St. Louis, Missouri.

Designed as a lasting salute to the intrepid explorers Lewis and Clark, the graceful curve of the arch also reminds every visitor of the courage and hope that fueled westward expansion.

Each year on October 28, locals and travelers pause to admire the landmark that has become an instant mood booster and a beloved symbol of American possibility.
