- The community and residents celebrated his extraordinary milestone with heartfelt tributes honoring his loyalty and dedication
Tom McKievick answered a newspaper ad for a security position at Fredericka Manor Retirement Community in Chula Vista, California, back in 1976. Five decades later, he’s still there — serving as the facility’s director of security with the same dedication and enthusiasm he brought on day one.
In June 2026, his employer celebrated Tom’s remarkable 50 years of service to the retirement community. It’s a milestone that speaks volumes about his character, work ethic, and genuine love for what he does.
“When I started, I wouldn’t think in a million years I’d still be here, but I enjoy the residents and the work,” he told KUSI.
What makes Tom’s achievement even more extraordinary? In all those years, he has never called in sick — not once. His perfect attendance record is a testament to his unwavering commitment and reliability.
“It’s entertaining and challenging and never boring,” he said.
“A lot of people think working at a senior facility is very quiet, but it can be very hectic and very challenging, but that’s part of the job.”
And Tom has no plans to retire anytime soon. He loves his job and the residents far too much to walk away.
Fredericka Manor Retirement Community shared its deep appreciation for Tom in a heartfelt social media post that captured the magnitude of his accomplishment.
“It is truly a rare and remarkable achievement to dedicate a lifetime to servicing seniors. To give loyalty, respect, and consistency for five decades — and to genuinely enjoy the work — is what makes this moment so incredibly special. Your commitment has made a lasting difference in countless lives, and today we celebrate not just years, but the heart behind them,” the retirement community wrote.
“Congratulations on this extraordinary milestone!”
The post sparked an outpouring of warm messages from colleagues, residents, and friends who wanted to honor Tom’s incredible journey.
“Congratulations on 50 years Tom! Of your many jobs and duties I appreciate you rescuing me when I’ve locked myself out of the music room! Thank you for all that you do to serve the residents and Fredericka team. Such an impressive career and never taking a sick day. You are truly one in 1 million,” someone wrote.
Another person shared an equally touching tribute: “One of a kind! Your years of service to Fredericka Manor’s thousands of resident of 50 years, and loyalty to the administrations and staff is commendable!!! Congratulations on a job well done!!!”
Tom’s story is a beautiful reminder that meaningful work, genuine care for others, and unwavering dedication can create a legacy that spans generations. His half-century of service has touched countless lives and set an inspiring example of what true commitment looks like.
