A dog owner’s clever ruse to plant a kiss on his golden retriever has left the internet in fits of laughter. In a video shared on Instagram on April 3, the owner, known by the username @marleyinnyc, can be seen holding up his shirt and pretending to smell it.

He then turns to his dog, Marley, and asks him to confirm if the shirt smells. However, there was nothing wrong with the shirt. It was simply a clever ploy to sneak a kiss on Marley—a classic trick.

The owner, Gary, persisted in his act until Marley finally gave in. As Marley lowered his head to sniff the shirt, Gary seized the opportunity to plant a kiss on top of his head.

Marley’s reaction was priceless. He immediately looked at Gary, his eyes filled with a sense of betrayal. The video’s caption, written from Marley’s perspective, humorously reads: “Gary iz overstepping the mark!”

Marley was clearly taken aback by Gary’s sneaky move. Not only was he surprised by the unexpected kiss, but he was also probably upset that he fell for such a trick and ended up looking foolish.

While humans often express affection through kisses, dogs don’t necessarily interpret this gesture in the same way. According to Mary R. Burch, a certified applied animal behaviorist, “dogs will tolerate kissing as it is often paired with petting and affectionate voice tones from owners.” Some dogs might even enjoy the experience.

However, not all dogs or dog breeds appreciate a smooch on the head. If a dog doesn’t show signs of enjoyment—like wagging their tail, looking alert, licking your hand or face, racing around, or acting excited—owners should consider other ways to show their affection.
