  • A woman spotted a puppy tied to a fire hydrant.
  • Next to the puppy was a bag that contained her favorite things, and a letter from her owner.
  • The dog is now up for adoption.

Baby Girl, a puppy from Green Bay, Wisconsin, sat patiently on the grass of a residential street last weekend. The dog’s leash was tethered to a fire hydrant, and Kylie Rose Engelhardt assumed she was only waiting for her owner to arrive.

Fortunately, Baby Girl was not left out in the cold for long. Engelhardt noticed her and checked to ensure she was okay.

Engelhardt wrote on Facebook:

“[I] sat outside with her for an hour keeping her warm waiting for someone to come back but no one did.”

A backpack containing all of Baby Girl’s favorite things — food, sweets, and toys — as well as a tragic note, was placed next to her. When Engelhardt realized Baby Girl had been abandoned, she took her to the Wisconsin Humane Society.

The photo of Baby Girl alone with her belongings has gotten a lot of attention this week. The 5-year-old canine is doing well, according to the shelter.

Angela Speed, vice president of communications for the shelter, told The Dodo:

“She is doing well and getting lots of TLC from our staff. She loves her walks, toys and performs an adorable ‘sit’ for treats. She’s a happy and affectionate pup.”

Wisconsin Humane Society posted a heartfelt letter on Facebook yesterday, specifically addressing Baby Girl’s previous owner. The shelter acknowledged how tough it was to abandon Baby Girl when they felt they couldn’t care for her any longer.

Baby Girl has completed her “stray hold” and will soon be available for adoption. Meanwhile, the beautiful pooch is getting lots of cuddles from the shelter staff as she waits for her second shot at a loving forever home.

“Rest assured that she’s safe, she’s getting tons of attention from our team, and she’s on track to find her next loving family very soon,” wrote Wisconsin Humane Society. “You can rest a little easier knowing your Baby Girl has a bright future ahead.”
