Family Shaves Their Head After 8-Year-Old Daughter Loses Hair To Alopecia [Video]

• Savannah Brown lost all her hair to an autoimmune disease called Alopecia.

• Soon, Savannah’s dad, aunt, grandma and great-aunt shaved their hair in solidarity with her.

When 8-year-old Savannah Brown got COVID-19, she was not just tired almost all the time, it also triggered an autoimmune disease called alopecia that caused her hair to fall out.  First there were bald patches and soon, she lost every last strand of her hair.   

Her mom Ruqayyah Qaiyim told her that when that happens, she would shave her hair.  And she did!

It was a huge comfort for Savannah to have her mom on her side.  Little did she know that it was not just her mom who was shaving their hair in solidarity with her.

Her dad, Steven Mack, had a surprise waiting for her when he picked her up in school.  In a video, her dad pulled off his hoodie and lo and behold, he had also shaved his hair! 

For Steven, it was not just a show of support for Savannah and Ruqayyah, it was also a challenge for society to rethink what is beautiful.

Steven said, “It kind of helped Savannah realize real beauty is designed by her character.”

The shaving of heads did not stop with Savannah’s mom and dad.  Her grandmother and aunt also went bald! Her aunt said that she did not want Savannah to struggle alone and that she wanted to understand what her niece was going through.

But her Savannah’s great-aunt really surprised them all when at a live tv appearance on “Good Day, Philadelphia”, she had her hair shaved in front of all the viewers!

Savannah can only be in awe at the support she is getting from her family. She said, “It was just like ‘OMG,’ I have an amazing family that supports me in a really awesome way. Not a lot of moms would do that and my mom is special to me. Really special.” 

With a family like hers, Savannah is well armed at dealing with the tough diagnosis. You are so blessed to have one awesome family!
