  • Brian Fennessy’s quick thinking saves two houses in Altadena.
  • The homes were the only ones in the area to survive the blaze.

In a remarkable display of ingenuity, a California fire chief managed to save his brother’s house and a neighbor’s home from a fierce blaze using only a carton of milk and a few beers.

Brian Fennessy, a seasoned firefighter with nearly five decades of experience, encountered a situation unlike any he had faced before.

When Fennessy learned about the Eaton Fire threatening the canyon above Altadena, he immediately set out to check on his brother’s family.

Despite being unable to reach them by phone, he was determined to offer his help.

Upon arriving in Altadena, Fennessy received the relieving news that his brother and family had evacuated safely.

With peace of mind about their safety, he decided to inspect his brother’s property.

As he drove through the area, he witnessed the devastation, with many buildings either engulfed in flames or reduced to ashes.

To his relief, his brother’s house and the neighbor’s remained unscathed, but danger loomed as the gas meter behind the house was ablaze.

Fennessy found a hose nearby, but to his dismay, no water flowed from it.

“I thought I’ll check the refrigerator and all that was in there was some milk and a couple beers,” Fennessy recounted.

In a resourceful move, he used the milk and beer to cool the gas meter, managing to pull the flames back.

“Went back out and kind of ran back there and cooled it off and pulled it back a little bit,” he added.

“It wasn’t completely out, so I wasn’t sure if it was going to rekindle, but it was all I could do.”

Miraculously, this unconventional method was sufficient, and his brother’s home, along with the neighbor’s, stood as the only surviving structures in the neighborhood.

This extraordinary tale of quick thinking and resourcefulness is a testament to the power of creativity in the face of adversity.
