First responders truly are heroes. While civilians’ first instinct is to run away and escape a disaster, first responders rush toward them and do their best to save and attend to everyone. Recently, the bodycam footage of a Florida deputy showed just how fast they act to an emergency.

Deputy First Class (DFC) Marcus Dawson responded to a report about a house fire. When he arrived at the location in Palm Coast, he instantly checked how many would need his help — and acted accordingly.

The deputy asked a neighbor how many residents were in the house, then scoped the vicinity to check if there were anyone inside. He repeatedly called out to anyone who might be inside and pounded on the door while the house’s smoke alarm blared loudly.

When he went to the back of the house, he heard barking from the family’s dogs. He then entered the porch and pounded on the glass door. After no response still, he entered the house and walked into a huge curtain of smoke.

It was then that he saw a little head pop up. A toddler had been hiding under a blanket in an effort to protect him from the flames in the nearby room.

DFC Dawson calmly greeted the child and asked him where his mommy was, but the terrified child asked the same thing.

The officer quickly carried the 3-year-old boy outside to safety. In the bodycam footage, the toddler’s arm can be seen bouncing up and down as he held tight onto his rescuer.

Sheriff Rick Staley praised DFC Dawson’s bravery and quick response. He put his safety aside to save a child’s life.

“Without DFC Dawson immediately running toward danger, even without a safety respirator, this could have been a much different outcome. This was a dangerous situation and we are very proud of DFC Dawson’s bravery and commitment to serving this community and saving a life,” the sheriff said.
