Forgiveness Transforms Lives: Mother and Son’s Killer Unite for Good

Quick Smiles:
- A grieving mother finds forgiveness and a new purpose by connecting with her son’s convicted killer.
- Despite a tragic past, a young man transforms his life with the support of his victim’s mother.
- A new nonprofit aims to honor a lost son by teaching valuable skills to at-risk youth.
In 2014, Tina Crawford faced an unimaginable tragedy when her only son, Ira Hopkins, was killed during a robbery on his birthday.
Initially, her heart was filled with anger and a desire for retribution. But as the trial progressed, she began to consider the possibility of forgiveness.
When the two men responsible for Ira’s death were sentenced, Crawford told the judge,
“I have forgiven the people that have done this to our family because my God tells me to, but what they did was wrong and it was hateful, and they must pay with whatever you decide.”
One of the young men, Jy’Aire Smith-Pennick, who was 18 at the time and did not fire the fatal shots, received a 20-year sentence.
Crawford later discovered a connection with one of Jy’Aire’s aunts, and through this relationship, she met another aunt. This unexpected bond laid the groundwork for Crawford to extend an olive branch.
She invited Jy’Aire to write her a letter. This simple gesture blossomed into a series of phone calls that revealed the hardships he had faced.
Jy’Aire had experienced homelessness, the loss of his parents, and a tumultuous youth that led him to make poor choices.
Throughout his incarceration, Crawford became a source of support, encouraging him to pursue education. He earned a high school diploma, an associate’s degree, and became a certified peer specialist.
Jy’Aire even authored an apology letter to Ira, which was shared online.
In October 2024, the Delaware Board of Pardons convened to review Jy’Aire’s case. Tina Crawford was among those who spoke in his favor.
“That man hurt me,” she said. “He took something from me…I lost a son…”
The Board decided unanimously to commute his sentence, granting him a chance at freedom.
Together, Jy’Aire and Tina are channeling their shared experiences into the IRA Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to teaching at-risk youth skills like carpentry, music, and photography.
This initiative seeks to honor Ira’s memory and steer young people away from the mistakes that once ensnared Jy’Aire.
In a poignant twist of fate, Jy’Aire now stands by Tina’s side, committed to protecting her as if she were his own mother.
Jy’Aire says he will protect Tina until the breath leaves his body. The son without a mother, watching over the mother without a son.
Let’s spread this story of love and hope by sharing it widely.
