  • The video has delighted over 553,000 viewers with Oakley’s cheeky antics.

In a video that has taken TikTok by storm with over 553,000 views, Oakley, a golden retriever with a penchant for mischief, is seen playfully refusing to look at her owner.

The clip captures Oakley closing her eyes as her owner taps her mouth, trying to retrieve a scrunched-up paper.

Despite the owner’s persistent attempts, Oakley holds her ground for nearly a minute, occasionally peeking open her eyes but never relinquishing the paper.

The text overlaid on the video humorously reads: “When your dog won’t look at you [because] she is being naughty.”

To delve into why dogs like Oakley might behave this way, insights were gathered from Joe Nutkins, a Kennel Club-accredited dog trainer based in the United Kingdom.

Nutkins shared that some dogs do understand the concept of being mischievous, saying, “I do believe there are some dogs who understand the concept of being naughty, and it’s a way of playing and interacting with us. It’s all fun and shows a cheeky personality!”

She explained that dogs often don’t intend to upset their owners but may inadvertently do so while seeking attention.

In Oakley’s case, Nutkins noted that the golden retriever is likely trying to capture her owner’s attention, a common tactic among dogs who pick up forbidden items to initiate play.

“Sometimes, they run and want us to chase them,” Nutkins commented. “Sometimes, they run but come back to tease us!”

Nutkins further explained that dogs might take their owner’s belongings to provoke a reaction.

However, if they do so without expecting a response, it might be interpreted as deliberately naughty behavior.

“Dogs that don’t realize what they are doing is ‘naughty’ will just turn their back, get comfy, and chew,” Nutkins said.

“They might growl or become defensive when the item is taken away, so it isn’t a game.”

She added, “Dogs that know they are being naughty tend to give us eye contact, wag their tails in various ways—ranging from slow to ultrafast—or run and pause, waiting for us to catch up before running and pausing again.”
