Quick Smiles:

  • Brave deputies save a pregnant driver from a potential plunge into a lake.
  • A swift ‘rolling roadblock’ maneuver averts disaster on Old Route 13.
  • Grateful mom-to-be safe thanks to quick-thinking officers.

In the quiet early hours of Monday, a potentially perilous situation unfolded on Old Route 13 near Carterville, Missouri. A pregnant woman found herself in distress when her car’s brakes failed, leaving her unable to stop the vehicle. Moving at a steady pace of approximately 30 miles an hour, she reached out to 911 for assistance.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office deputies quickly responded to her call, finding the Chevrolet with its brake lights on but still moving forward. The deputies sprang into action with a strategic ‘rolling roadblock’ maneuver. They positioned their patrol car in front of the woman’s vehicle and gradually slowed down.

This allowed the front bumper of her car to gently touch the back bumper of the patrol car. With the patrol car’s brakes functioning perfectly, the deputy was able to bring both vehicles to a safe stop. This timely intervention occurred just a quarter of a mile from the local Crab Orchard Lake.

The sheriff expressed the gravity of the situation in a social media post, stating that without the deputy’s timely intervention, the driver and vehicle would have likely gone into the water upon reaching the lake. Emergency Medical Services arrived shortly after, exercising “an abundance of caution” upon learning that the driver was pregnant. Thanks to the deputies’ quick thinking and effective action, both the driver and her unborn child remained safe from harm.
