Heroic Officers Rescue Injured Bald Eagle, Social Media Celebrates

On a recent Saturday in Apex, North Carolina, a group of compassionate police officers became unsung heroes when they came to the aid of an injured bald eagle.

Officers Lamb, Elfberg, Murphy, Moore, and Kalinowski responded to a call about the distressed bird, demonstrating their commitment to all members of the community, feathered or otherwise.

Recognizing the need for specialized care, they enlisted the help of Luke Howard, an animal control officer from Holly Springs, North Carolina.

Howard, captured in photos gently holding the majestic creature, assessed the damage to its wing.

He then transported the eagle to a local bird sanctuary for a comprehensive evaluation.

In a video shared on social media, Howard explained that while bald eagles occasionally collide with objects, their eyesight remains exceptional.

He assured viewers that the bird’s wing injury was treatable.

The rescue story resonated with many, as one person commented, “I needed to hear a ‘feel good’ story today! Bravo gentlemen.”

Another user praised the collaborative effort, stating, “Great team work! So happy you all saved such an American beauty!”

This incident echoes a similar rescue in April when agencies and wildlife experts joined forces to save a bald eagle eaglet that had fallen from its nest.

The bald eagle, a symbol of strength and freedom, was designated as the national bird of the United States in 1782.

As noted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, “Bald eagles, like other eagles worldwide, had been seen by many as symbols of strength, courage, freedom and immortality for generations.”

Though protected under the National Emblem Act of 1940, these birds face threats that have led to population declines.

President John F. Kennedy once remarked, “The Founding Fathers made an appropriate choice when they selected the bald eagle as the emblem of the nation.”

He emphasized the importance of preserving this emblematic species, warning, “But as latter-day citizens we shall fail our trust if we permit the eagle to disappear.”
