In a bid to spark a sense of nobleness and leadership to the young generation, an African-Canadian artist came up with a brilliant idea: a mirror surrounded by black legendary heroes — just in time for the Black History Month, too!

Luanga Nuwame from Mississauga, Ontario, a.k.a the “cardboard artist,” released a special, limited edition of a mirror bearing the 14 faces of Black heroes who truly made history.

According to Luanga, news about the rising depression in youth especially at the height of the pandemic moved him to create this “masterpiece.”

“For the first time in recent history, you have kids with no school interactions… and many are questioning their potential future. From there, the idea for my Reflection of Black Excellence design just hit me,” he said.

Mirrors would reflect how we actually look, but Luanga hoped that anyone looking right through the mirror will be able to see something beyond himself.

Just like Dr. King, Bessle Coleman, Geroge Dixon, and Rosa Parks, among others, these great people “were once unsure and scared kids.”

Luanga admitted that he wanted his artworks — no matter how simple or intricate they are — to awaken a deeper sense of being, especially among the youth.

“I hope it can inspire at least some kids to want to be just as great as the greats. Like all my work, I make everything by hand—just me, cardboard, glass, and a cutting blade in my home office.”

The mirror comes in two designs, the Black and the Canadian editions.

The Black version features American household names such as Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and Jackie Robinson. The Canadian edition meanwhile boasts the faces of Carrie Best, Elijah McCoy, and George Bonga.

Made with locally-sourced renewable materials, the mirror is surrounded by six hand-cut layers made of industrial cardboard, and can be mounted on the wall.  Both bear a writing that says “Love Yourself Always.”

Since the mirror is limited edition, there are only 50 copies available for each version. But Luanga said that if all items are sold out, he will definitely create more, which will feature other Black heroes.

Priced at $49.99, Luanga shared that “this idea will continue on for sure.”

Luanga runs an online business, Zelpha Comics Ltd. It focused on indie comic books but later on expanded to trading cards, board game concepts, cardboard novelties, and custom design services.
