In Brazil’s Iguaçu National Park, scientists have discovered jaguars making meow-like sounds while searching for their cubs. This striking new behavior was caught on video by a camera trap survey conducted by British and Brazilian ecologists.

The study documented these unique vocalizations in two female jaguars, revealing that their communication is more complex than previously known.

Although jaguars cannot purr like housecats due to their anatomy, these “meows” are believed to help mothers locate their young or signal to potential mates.

“Our results suggest that [jaguars’] vocal repertoire is more complex than what is described in the literature,” the researchers shared.

Dr. Marina Duarte, a Research Fellow at the University of Salford, expressed excitement: “As far as we know this is the first time that jaguars have been recorded using this kind of communication, which we are incredibly excited about.”

Another researcher, Vania Foster, added, “These results highlight the value of long-term monitoring efforts for this iconic Atlantic Forest species and show that there is still much to learn about how jaguars interact and communicate in their natural environment.”
