  • A dog fell into the freezing water of a pond and was getting too far from land.
  • A jogger who had cold-water training rescued the dog and brought it back to dry land.
  • A witness to the rescue posted it on Facebook and the jogger is now being hailed as a hero.

Darcy Pell swims in cold, icy water as a hobby.  It proved to be helpful when he saw a group of people pointing at a black dog that had fallen into a pond in North Yorkshire, England.

He immediately plunged into the freezing water in his jogging clothes when he realized that the dog was going too far from land.  It would be difficult for the dog to get back on shore.

With just his hands, he broke through the thin ice and made his way to the terrified dog.

With Darcy’s guidance and help, the dog slowly but steadily followed the path that Darcy broke through.  Once they were within the other bystanders’ reach, they pulled him and the dog to safety.

According to Darcy, his cold-water training made him understand his limits enough to know how to handle the struggling pup.

The amazing rescue was recorded by one witness, Paula Town, who posted it to Facebook.  She wrote, “What a hero, this complete stranger rescued this family’s dog when it got into trouble in Pontefract Park.”

She said that when she arrived at the lake, the dog was already in the water and trying to get out of the ice.  She added, “I felt panic-stricken and scoured the side of the lake for a life buoy but couldn’t find one. Luckily that guy came along, he lowered himself into the water, and the rest is on the video.”

But Darcy does not consider himself a hero.  He just saw a dog in need. He wrote on Facebook, “Luckily swim in cold/icy water as a hobby and know the risks it can cause. Carried on my run after so no big deal. Was given a jacket by my run buddy. Obviously I wouldn’t recommend people doing the same.”
