  • The thought of getting into an MRI scanner can be a scary one, especially for kids.
  • A LEGO employee decided to create a miniature LEGO MRI scanner set to help children understand the process.
  • Interacting and playing with the models made kids less stressed about it and got them into a playful mood.

The MRI scanner can look scary to most adults, and can be a nightmare for kids. So, a LEGO employee decided to create a miniature LEGO MRI Scanner set to help make the process less intimidating.

Erik Ullerlund Staehr teamed up with a hospital in Denmark to create the miniature sets.

The miniature sets give kids a glimpse into what the machine does. Getting to learn about the process through playing helps kids feel more relaxed.

Erik shared how proud he is of the project’s positive impact. It has turned “an often highly stressful experience into a positive, playful one.”

The LEGO Foundation recently announced that they will be distributing 600 LEGO MRI Scanners to hospitals worldwide! Volunteers built each set, so they will be shipped to hospitals at no cost.

They also made free training videos to teach medical staff how best to incorporate these models to help guide kids through the MRI process.

“The model is designed around the child’s MRI treatment, and is a means for clinicians to facilitate both role play and dialogue,” the LEGO Foundation wrote. “So that the child feels safe and can build confidence and resilience before the actual journey, in turn reducing stress and anxiety.”

The foundation received 1,500 request forms for the models in just a single day!

Remarking on the “overwhelming feedback,” the foundation wrote, “We’re honored to be able to help both children and their parents have a more positive and less stressful experience, and look forward to supporting even more families around the world with the expansion of this concept.”
