  • An Australian store was ransacked by an echidna who dozed off from drinking alcohol.
  • The New South Wales Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) assisted in setting the animal free.

As an employee arrived at the Australian liquor store where he works, he knew there was something amiss. True enough, the store’s security camera revealed that there was an intruder.

The store was ransacked overnight, with messy shelves and broken bottles all over the floor. And the culprit? A spiny animal native to the region: a little echidna.

The footage showed that the tiny creature managed to enter the empty liquor store and settled in as if it was his home. As he wandered the aisles, his attention was pinned to the booze-lined shelves and fridges — like he found a paradise.

“He had gone through a couple of bottles of vodka and a bottle of chocolate Bailey’s. He was sleeping it off for sure,” the employee told Australia’s ABC News.

The tipsy animal was found beneath one of the shelving units, probably trying to sober up.

The New South Wales Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) arrived at the store to assist in setting the echidna free, who was luckily not injured during his escapade.

“It was ascertained that the echidna had really good taste, as the shelving it had climbed prior to finding its hiding spot was filled with bottles of champagne, all of which were now lying smashed all over the floor,” WIRES wrote.

The thorny intruder “moved away in a straight line” when he was set free in a safe location back outside the store. WIRES said that he might not have consumed too much champagne during the night.

Having an alcohol-filled adventure in the town might be a memorable experience for the echidna, especially if he felt a bit of a hangover.

Whether it was the echidna’s first time to drink or he was actually a drunkard, no one could tell. But the WIRES hoped that the little creature had learned his lesson and won’t break in again.
