  • Neslihan Oranci has been feeding local cats at her new place in Turkey.
  • Whenever food is low, the cats would meow at the door for the food bowl to be refilled.
  • A crow has learned to meow from observing the routine, and gets fed, too!

There’s a clever crow children story that tells of a thirsty crow that piled pebbles on a water container in order to reach the water and drink.  But this time, a crow learns to meow in order to get free cat food.

Neslihan Oranci leaves food for the stray cats outside her new place in Turkey for them to eat.  The hungry cats would inform her that there is food shortage by meowing at her door.

She would then refill the food bowl.

Little did she know that a crow was observing the routine and taking notes.

Until one day when she heard meowing outside her door.  She was thinking that one of the cats was hungry and was asking for food.

But when she looked through the window, it was not a cat but a crow!

Neslihan said, “I was very surprised. I’ve never heard a crow speak like a cat!”

The crow learned how to imitate how the cats’ meow so he would be given some food!

Never one to ignore a hungry animal’s plea, fake cat or not, she fed the crow and learned that not only does the crow meow, it also learned how to make the sound of an angry cat to scare other cats away when feeding.

This got Neslihan to think that all those times that she heard the familiar sound at her door, maybe, it was not just the cats but also the crow.  But she doesn’t mind.  In fact, she thinks the crow even deserves a reward for being clever.

Neslihan said that it is very thought-provoking. “Cats learned to communicate with us over thousands of years of domestication. But the crow learned it quickly, and for the same gain. It seems they could decode our language before we understand theirs!” added Neslihan in awe.
