  • The Mackenzie couple has been married for 37 years and has endured a stroke, death of a loved one and a cancer diagnosis.
  • A motorcycle accident that wiped out the husband’s memory is the worst that they have been through.
  • The husband was able to regain his memory and when he did, he proposed and eventually renewed their marriage vows.

This is a love story that withstood deployment, living in a different country, stroke and a near-fatal accident.  This is the stuff that some people can only dream of having— love that endures challenges and triumphs.

Andrew and Kristy Mackenzie were only 19 and 16, respectively, when they met and fell in love on a camping trip in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  Andrew was in the army and was about to be deployed to Germany when he proposed to Kristy a year after they met.

The two got married in 1985 and stayed at a base in Germany.  They had two kids in the 90s.

It was not a bed of roses for the couple.  When Kristy was 17, she suffered a stroke and lost her mother to breast cancer.  In 2016, Andrew was diagnosed with prostate cancer.  But Kristy said their motorcycle accident was the worst that they had to hurdle.

The couple was flung out of their motorcycle close to 60 feet in the air.  Andrew had multiple injuries to his vertebrae, pelvis bone, scapula, ribs, and nose and a concussion.  Kristy had a broken back, left scapula, hip and ribs, shoulder damage and a mild concussion.

Andrew had emergency surgery for internal bleeding and was fitted with two screws in his hip. When a nurse asked him what his name was after regaining consciousness, he knew his name but he said it was 1993.

Kristy said, ‘He knew me, but I could see him looking through me.’  She added, ‘I tell you, that’s the scariest day of my life. Seeing him look through me like that, I didn’t know how I was going to get him back.’

After Andrew was released from the intensive care unit, she requested to stay in the same room with Andrew.  She believed that as long as they were together, Andrew would get better.

Fortunately, Andrew’s memory gradually came back.

And when they went out of the hospital after weeks of treatment and rehabilitation, Andrew proposed to Kristy and two days later, they got married again!

Their love has endured the trials because they never gave up on each other.
