Who would have thought that bubble wraps and syringes can create such an extraordinary work of art?

Bradley Hart, an artist based from New York, has been making quite a name in the art industry as he makes portraits out of bubble wrap with his canvass and syringes as his paint brush.

Bradley uses a unique technique he called the “injection painting,” where the entire painstaking process begins by loading around 1,800 to 2,500 syringes with acrylic paint. This takes roughly about four to five days to preload. He then injects these into each of the bubble, row after row.

As the paint is injected into a bubble, the excess paint drips down the back of the piece. The process creates two different paintings: the injection painting and the impression painting.

The injection painting is the pixelated picture in the front, while the impression painting is created from the paint that drips from the bubbles down the back of the piece. The whole process takes between three to four weeks to complete.

According to Bradley, the tedious process beginning from the color placement is programmed through a custom-made computer algorithm which he devised himself.

Going back, Bradley shared how he came up with this special form of art.

First, the history of bubble wraps raised much of his curiosity as well as interest to use it as his canvass. Apparently, bubble wraps were originally used as textured decorative wallpaper. However, it became more useful and popular as a packaging and shipment material meant to protect fragile items.

“Researching the history of bubble wrap and realizing that it was meant to be wallpaper brought me around to this great idea,” Bradley said. “What is a painting—short of the cultural significance and historical value it may obtain over time? It’s ostensibly a wall covering.”

Second, syringes were nothing new to him, and have been a commonplace in his household. In 2003, Bradley was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and part of his treatment routine involved self-injections. Despite this, he abhorred the idea of sticking himself with needles.

“I realized, ‘Oh my God, how perverse is this? You wouldn’t inject yourself for a decade, but you’re sitting here with thousands of syringes in front of you, injecting paint into bubble wrap!’” he said.

Presently, Bradley has completed over a hundred masterpieces.  His latest creation is a homage to rap icon Notorious B.I.G.

He also created portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, and John Lennon.
