Quick Smiles:

  • New Jersey police officers delivered a baby in a car using hand gestures and translation apps.
  • Neither officer had medical training but acted swiftly and compassionately.
  • Mother and newborn girl were healthy and safely brought to the hospital.

Benjamin Haines and Gabriel Chiarelli of the Woodstown Police Department quickly became unexpected heroes when a man, unable to speak English, sought urgent help at their station. Rushing outside, they discovered a woman in labor in the backseat of a car, prompting them to use Google Translate and hand motions to assist with the birth.

“We weren’t really expecting that—especially the baby coming out when we opened the car door,” Chiarelli shared with 6ABC.

Though communication was limited, Haines guided the mother and helped deliver a healthy baby girl just moments later. By the time medics arrived, mother and child were wrapped up warmly and ready for transport to the hospital.

The officers reflected that, despite having no experience in childbirth, they were proud to provide help in this joyful emergency. Their quick and caring response was commended by their station chief.

Stories like this remind us of the uplifting power of compassion and teamwork in unexpected situations. Celebrate quick thinking and kindness—share the good news!
