Orangutans at an Indonesian zoo are showing that they have a sense of style too! A video uploaded on TikTok by user Lola Testu (@minorcrimes) captures an orangutan trying on her sunglasses after she accidentally dropped them into the primate’s enclosure.

The video quickly went viral, amassing over 44 million views, more than 11 million likes, and over 161,000 comments as of Wednesday afternoon. Testu captioned the clip, “so I’m down a pair of sunglasses but up a very good story.”

In the video, a large orangutan notices the dropped sunglasses and makes its way over to the accessory. As it picks up the sunglasses, a voice offscreen says, “Oh no, don’t eat it.” The orangutan then examines the sunglasses and puts them on, prompting laughter and the exclamation, “She’s putting them on!”

The clip continues with the orangutan sitting next to a smaller one, wearing the sunglasses upside down. The smaller orangutan also tries to get the eyewear but is unsuccessful. In the end, the orangutan throws the sunglasses back to the zoo guests, and an off-camera zookeeper rewards the primate with some leaves.

Many viewers were amazed by the adorable clip and the orangutan’s understanding of what to do with the sunglasses. One user commented, “These animals are so damn smart,” while another joked, “I swear they can talk but just don’t want to pay taxes.”

According to the World Wildlife Fund, orangutans share 96.4% of human genes. Sadly, these incredible animals are critically endangered, with only about 104,700 Bornean orangutans, 13,846 Sumatran orangutans, and 800 Tapanuli orangutans left in the world.
