Great news for the West African lion! Camera traps in Senegal’s Niokolo Koba National Park have captured footage of a lioness named Florence and her three cubs playing and nursing, and scientists believe that Florence has given birth to nine cubs since 2021.

Florence is now considered the matriarch of Niokolo Koba and has contributed approximately one-third of the park’s growing lion population, which may now number as many as 40 individuals.


This is a thrilling sign of recovery for the Critically Endangered West African lion, of which only 120-374 individuals remain in the wild today.
