  • An exhausted bulldog named Buddha has been gaining social media sympathy due to his relatable reaction to being woken up by his owner’s newborn baby.
  • In a video shared on TikTok, Buddha can be seen standing at the edge of his owner’s bed at 2:59 a.m., his weary expression speaking volumes about his disrupted sleep schedule.
  • Despite the disruption to his sleep pattern, Buddha’s plight has been met with a wave of support and empathy from social media users, many of whom have shared their own experiences with pets and babies.

The arrival of a newborn baby is a joyous occasion, but it also brings about significant changes in the household. One of these changes is the inevitable disruption to sleep schedules. According to a survey conducted by Snuz involving 1,300 new parents, 70% reported losing an average of three hours of sleep per night during their baby’s first year. This amounts to a staggering loss of 133 nights of sleep over a 12-month period.

While sleep deprivation is a common plight for new parents, it’s not often we consider the impact on our furry family members.

Enter Buddha the bulldog. According to his owner, Buddha “wakes up every time the baby wakes up.” This has resulted in a rather tired and relatable pup, who has quickly become a social media sensation.

A video shared on TikTok, under the handle buddha.da.bulldog, shows Buddha standing at the edge of his owner’s bed at 2:59 a.m., his eyes heavy with sleep as his owner nurses her baby. “Buddha is so tired,” his owner remarks, capturing the dog’s resigned expression as he closes his eyes. “This is too much for him.”

Dogs, like humans, need their sleep. However, their sleep patterns differ from ours. A 2020 study published in Scientific Reports found that dogs typically have two peak periods of activity: one from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and another from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. A 3 a.m. wake-up call, like the one Buddha is experiencing, significantly disrupts this pattern.

Despite the ongoing sleep disruptions, Buddha has found solace in the wave of support he’s received on social media. Users have been quick to express their sympathy and share their own experiences.

For some, Buddha’s weary expression was all too familiar. “This is me right now,” one user empathized, while another reflected, “That was my face 5 years ago seriously my last baby cried every day and night.”
