Stress-Free Solutions For Traveling Pet Owners
Quick Smiles:
- Multiple pet care options help everyone enjoy vacation
- Experts offer guidance for your furry friend’s comfort
- More destinations are welcoming travelers with pets
Planning a summer getaway can be both exhilarating and stressful for pet owners. When your beloved fur-baby can’t join the adventure, making sure they are safe and happy is top priority.
The good news? There are plenty of solutions that keep pets cozy and owners worry-free while apart. Veterinary professionals and animal trainers share these top three recommendations for peace of mind while you’re away.
Pet-Sitting At Home
Hiring a trusted pet sitter to care for your pet in their familiar surroundings is an excellent way to minimize stress. As Dr. Liza Cahn explains, “This allows your pet to stay in their own environment, keep a normal routine, and receive one-on-one care.” Some sitters offer drop-in visits, while others stay overnight or for the entire duration.
Senior veterinarian Dr. Carly Fox adds that vet clinic staff may offer pet-sitting services, which means medical expertise is close at hand—a huge bonus for pets with special needs. While pet-sitting is cozy for pets, it can be pricey and may not suit animals needing constant supervision.
Boarding Facilities And Pet Day Care
For sociable animals, boarding facilities or pet daycares provide a fun and interactive alternative. Dion Studinski, founder of Ancillary K9 dog training, notes, “Many offer group play, structured activities, and even dog ‘vacation packages.’” This environment is perfect for pets who thrive in active, friendly settings.
However, boarding may not suit every animal. Pets with anxiety, medical needs, or a preference for quiet might find a kennel overwhelming. It’s also important to consider potential exposure to other pets’ illnesses.
Home-Boarding With A Sitter
Home-boarding is a growing trend where pets stay at the sitter’s house. Dr. Cahn describes this as a “middle ground” between at-home care and a busy kennel. Pets enjoy personalized attention without being far from the comforts of home life, and this option is often more affordable than in-home services.
“I always advise clients to match the environment to their dog’s temperament and training level, and to ask lots of questions before booking any service,” Studinski shares. Whichever style of care you prefer, experts agree: verify references, check credentials, and try a trial stay before booking your vacation.
Bringing Pets On Vacation
Not ready to part with your four-legged companion? More destinations are welcoming pets, with dog-friendly road trips, outdoor escapes, and pet-friendly hotels popping up everywhere. “Road trips are one of the most dog-friendly choices,” says Studinski. “Your dog stays with you the whole time and you can plan stops for walks and play.”
Dr. Fox favors destinations with lots of outdoor space and special amenities. She shares, “I personally love hiking vacations or beach destinations like San Diego, Cape Cod, or the Hamptons.” Many hotels now offer pet beds, bowls, and outdoor dining to make pets feel at home.
Before traveling, make sure you have veterinary records, medications, and a pet first-aid kit on hand. Dr. Cahn also reminds travelers that staying home may be easier for most pets, as many thrive on routine. “Although the idea of traveling with your pet might seem appealing, logistically, it is often easier to leave them at home,” she advises.
The Heart Of The Matter
Your pet’s age, temperament, health needs, and your comfort level should guide your decision. Whether you opt for in-home visits, a social pet hotel, or a road trip adventure, the key is making sure your pet feels safe and loved.
With thoughtful planning and expert advice, everyone—human and furry—can enjoy a happy, stress-free holiday!
