Most of us have tried to take up a new hobby during the lockdown. And while some have decided it wasn’t for them, a teen discovered a hidden talent. Fourteen-year-old Makenzy Beard from Wales gave painting a try. Now, she’s winning competitions, being featured in galleries, and selling her artwork for thousands of dollars.

Makenzy said that her mom used to love painting, so they already had a stock of brushes, paints, and canvasses. So, she decided to try it out. It turns out that she’s really good at it!

Her first piece was a portrait of John Tucker, the farmer next door. She simply asked to take a photo of him while he was unloading hay nets from his truck.

The portrait quickly garnered international attention — it looked exactly like him!

Makenzy earned a place at the Young Artists’ Summer Show in the Royal Academy of Arts when she entered the portrait. And in October, her works were exhibited at the Blackwater Gallery in Cardiff, where several were sold to international buyers. One canvas even got a £10,000 bid!

The teen’s most recent portrait is of her grandfather, Bernard Davies. The artwork is not for sale but is among the 6 canvasses currently displayed in Blackwater.

The portrait has captured her grandfather’s warm smile perfectly!

Her artwork collection features portraits of mostly old workmen and children, depicting either joyful or indifferent expressions.

She also paints pictures of her other great love, field hockey. And while the sport is also time-consuming, she wants to continue painting — perhaps not as an occupation, but at least as a hobby.

You can check out more of her artwork on her Instagram.
