Customers at a pet store in Massachusetts got a surprise when they saw a little boy seemingly making friends with a young cow.

Upon closer inspection, it turned out that the toddler was actually bonding with Kernel, a one-year-old harlequin great Dane.

The massive dog and the little boy, who were both one year old at the time, took a moment to check each other out. The toddler was fascinated by Kernel’s size and splotchy fur and couldn’t help but giggle as he got to know him.

Kernel, on the other hand, was more interested in how the little boy smelled, perhaps hoping to find some leftover food in his hair. Despite his size, Kernel is gentle and well-behaved, thanks to his owner’s efforts in getting him certified as an AKC Canine Good Citizen.

And as it turns out, Kernel is a very good boy indeed. Last year, he won the “Official Good Dog” award from Big Barker USA. The medal is “awarded for acts of kindness, loyalty, and bravery.”

The meeting between Kernel and the toddler was captured on camera and shared on social media. The video quickly went viral, and it’s easy to see why.
